[Binghamton, NY] While reaffirming its role as an advocate for working women around the state, the former New York Federation of Business and Professional Women has adopted a new name, New York State Women, Inc. Selection of the new name follows on the heels of the group's 90th Annual Conference in June ar which a strong majority vote of the members chose to transform the organization into an independent entity.
“Here in New York, we are a membership organization; the national BPW group is not,” explained Mary Goutos, the state group’s president for 2009-2010. “BPW has licensing and financial requirements that are not acceptable to our members. So we needed to take a different path.”
“Our philosophy and goals remain in close harmony with those of the BPW nationwide,” added Goutos. “But here in New York we are simply going to move forward under a new identity and concentrate on the issues affecting women in our own state.”
“New York State Women, Inc.” was selected from among fifteen proposed names put before the 97 members who had attended the conference, according to Goutos. New York State Women, Inc. is the leading statewide advocate for working women on the issues of work-life balance and workplace equity. 70 local groups in 11 districts around the state provide members with professional development programs, networking opportunities and scholarships for women. www.newyorkstatewomeninc.org
